Hospitals in North Florida and South Georgia treat thousands of new cancer cases each year — and breast cancer is the most common diagnosis.

The #FlamingoChallenge, a partnership between First Commerce Credit Union and the foundations that support three hospitals in the region, has raised more than $500,000 since it was launched to benefit local breast cancer patients.

This unique fundraising initiative brings a flamboyant twist to Breast Cancer Awareness Month by providing colorful yard signs adorned with flamingos to donors so they can proudly display them in front of their homes and businesses to show their support.

Participants also are encouraged to take pictures of themselves with their flocks and post on social media challenging others to “join the flock.”

Raising money is only a first step. The #FlamingoChallenge is about impact. When you donate, you can have the confidence that there are real, tangible purchases made and expenses covered that help make patients’ cancer journeys easier.

#FlamingoChallenge funds have been used to cover costs of advanced technology that gives surgeons greater precision removing cancerous tissue. Money raised through the #FlamingoChallenge also goes toward providing access to mammograms and other early detection services.

Funds also are used to help relieve the financial strain that breast cancer treatment can bring, helping pay for lodging and accommodations for patients who need to travel and items that are designed to improve treatment outcomes and provide comfort.
